Working

Highways are important in Somerset. We’re a rural county with the tenth largest road network in the country. As the highways authority, we look after 6,600km of road, 2,000 bridges, 900km of ditches, 120,000 gullies and 52,000 street lights.

This network is growing too, with 9km of new highway every year, 9,500 planning applications every year and 700+ live development sites at any one time.

We build, we maintain, we invest, we improve, we deliver.

We listen to our communities and deliver solutions to their local issues through our dynamic Small Improvement Schemes programme. These cover everything from speed reviews and new pedestrian crossings to traffic calming and cycle paths.

And we deliver major infrastructure improvements too, from new roads and bridges to complex junction redesigns and groundbreaking drainage schemes. In 2015, our innovative work to raise a road at Muchelney by up to 1.3m to protect against flooding was highly commended at the National Transport Awards and a winner at the MJ Achievement Awards.

“I think it’s fair to say that Somerset is going through an unprecedented period of growth, we’ve got major housing projects going on in all of our key towns and a nuclear power station being built on our doorstep!”

Phil Lowndes

“People think when you get down here it’s quiet and it’s all rural villages but it isn’t! It’s got the town centres, you’ve got the nightlife but you’ve got the small community and village feel.”
